"Food Made for T.V."
by Cynthia S. Kennedy
Nevada Magazine
July/August 2010

Americans can’t get their fill of the Food Network, and two of the channel’s most popular programs came to Reno recently to get a taste of four area restaurants’ delectable fare.

Who doesn’t enjoy Bobby Flay’s sneaky ambush tactics when, with no forewarning, he announces to a chef that he’s arrived to challenge them on their signature dish? This happened to Misty Young, owner of Squeeze In, when she thought she was simply demonstrating her expert omelet-making techniques for the Food Network.

Her crowd favorite, “Racy Tracy” (bacon, avocado, mushrooms, and jack cheese), one of the restaurant’s trademark Best Omelets on the Planet, had to go head-to-toe with Flay’s “Spanish Flay” (red bell peppers, potatoes with smoked paprika, and jack cheese) in the “Throwdown” for the most eggs-travagant omelet construction.

[Squeeze In note: actually, Bobby Flay's omelette had Manchego cheese instead of Jack, and piquillo peppers instead of bell peppers. Our tribute omelette has red bells and jack.]

Flay’s entry won with the judges, and in a generous concession, Young put his creation permanently on her menu. Flay praised his opponent, saying, “You are the nicest competitor in the history of Throwdown.” Full article...

"A healthy Squeeze: Restaurant family sheds pounds, adds healthy dishes to menu"
by Geralda Miller
Reno Gazette-Journal
December 22, 2009

Gary and Misty Young own the Squeeze In restaurant in Truckee, while sister, Shila Morris, and her husband, Chad, own the northwest Reno location. The restaurants have become known for their vast selection of omelettes.

[Kay] Young, who said she helps out her parents, designed an alternative menu for both locations called the Healthy Obsession Program.

The menu has heart healthy selections for breakfast and lunch. The SoCal Low Cal, a jumbo flour tortilla wrapped around scrambled egg whites, sautéed mushrooms, fat-free turkey breast and homemade salsa, is Young's favorite.

"No cheese," she said. "You won't find egg yolks. You won't find grease. Everything is sautéed fresh without any oil, just low-fat stuff." Full article...

"Striking foodie gold in Northern California's Gold Rush Region"
by Keven Ann Willey, Dallas Morning News
San Jose Mercury News

It's not as well known as Napa or Sonoma, but the Mother Lode region along the western side of the Sierra Nevada is just as rich in scenery, food and wine.

The natural beauty of this area stretching from Lake Tahoe south to Yosemite National Park is unsurpassed. And there are accommodations of all types, from comfortable campsites and budget hotels to quaint B&Bs and splashy resorts.

Foodies will find special treats in the heart of this Gold Rush region, among them, working generally north to south:

SQUEEZE IN: In downtown Truckee, 13 miles northwest of Lake Tahoe, this tiny hole-in-the-wall features a phone- book-size menu of creative omelets ranging from the special (spinach, black olive, red pepper, feta, pesto) to the bizarre but surprisingly good (peanut butter, apple, banana and honey).

Variations of pancakes and French toast also are featured. If you get there as we did about 9:30 on a Sunday morning, expect to stand in line. It's well worth the wait. Full story...

"A Good Egg"
Moonshink Ink
March 14, 2008

They say you should start your day with a good breakfast and Truckee/Tahoe restaurants are making sure that is a pleasurable possibility this Easter weekend. Following are some of Moonshine Ink’s reviewers’ (it’s a tough job but somebody’s got to do it) and readers’ favorites.

Celebrating 35 years in business, this charming, cozy breakfast, brunch and lunch nook is worth the wait. Owner Gary and Misty Young have made it a family affair and it shows in the attention to service and quality. While there have been some up-grades over the years (they now take credit cards) the menu has remained relatively unchanged with the exception of minor improvements i.e., prawns now replace the bay shrimp in omelet number nine. With 63 omelets to choose from and a dozen other breakfast selections it can seem a bit daunting, but have no fear: the menu provides happy icons indicating “most popular” choices and the wait staff is very free with advice.

Recommends include: Huevos Montana, topped with sprouts and the best salsa this side of, well, Mexico. (It’s all about the shredded carrots.) The décor is an interesting combination of kitsch and old-Truckee memorabilia, right down the signatures on the 200-year-old original brick walls. Squeeze In also serves a nice Mimosa and Bloody Marys made with Han, an Asian Vodka served exclusively in beer and wine establishments in New York and California. Most Truckee locals avoid a wait by going Tuesdays through Thursdays, but since you’ll be out hunting eggs all day, get there early (they open at 7 a.m.) or call in your order for a takeout. "Truckee More Than a Stop on the Road"
San Francisco Chronicle Travel Pages

But maybe all that shopping has worked up an appetite for more nutritious fare. The tiny Squeeze In (11-by-60 feet) advertises "Best Omelettes on the Planet" and sets about proving it with 62 varieties. If you don't hunger for any of the 62, you might settle for one of the 28 kinds of sandwiches listed on the menu.

Decor at the Squeeze is funky cozy, with hanging strings of beads, photos and other assorted memorabilia on the walls. The building, originally three stories high and twice its current width, was at one time the community's first bank (and scene of its first bank robbery). Through the years, it also housed a real estate office, several saloons, furniture store, insurance office, a barbershop, optometrist and even a roller rink. Full story...

"Time for Tahoe: there are more reasons than ever to visit the West's greatest lake"
Sunset Magazine
by Rachel Levin
August 2006

Go early to beat the wait at the skinny little Squeeze In cafe. A choice from the dizzying list of 62 three-egg omelets should get you through the moderate 3.2-mile (round-trip) Five Lakes Trail. Full story...

"Serving It Up Man-Sized"

NewsReview.com
By Brad Bynum

The Squeeze Inn, right in the middle of Truckee’s main drag, serves a wild and unruly assortment of omelets. They also serve lunch and other breakfast items, but that doesn’t matter. What does matters are the omelets: Big, man-sized omelets—omelets larger than the hearts of eight dead elk, omelets loaded with fresh ingredients like bell peppers and avocado, omelets with catchy names like “Jeremiah” and “Racy Tracy.”

All of the omelets come with toast and a healthy portion of savory home fries. So you get a good whopping of food. It’ll get your motor running. Even on cold icy mornings. You know, before you head out to the slopes. Full story...
