But maybe all that shopping has worked up an appetite for more nutritious fare. The tiny Squeeze Inn (11-by-60 feet) advertises "Best Omelettes on the Planet" and sets about proving it with 62 varieties. If you don't hunger for any of the 62, you might settle for one of the 28 kinds of sandwiches listed on the menu.
Decor at the Squeeze is funky cozy, with hanging strings of beads, photos and other assorted memorabilia on the walls. The building, originally three stories high and twice its current width, was at one time the community's first bank (and scene of its first bank robbery). Through the years, it also housed a real estate office, several saloons, furniture store, insurance office, a barbershop, optometrist and even a roller rink.

Go early to beat the wait at the skinny little Squeeze In cafe. A choice from the dizzying list of 62 three-egg omelets should get you through the moderate 3.2-mile (round-trip) Five Lakes Trail. A fairly well-trodden path spans the boulder-strewn, pine-lined Granite Chief Wilderness near Alpine Meadows. By the time you reach the first, and largest, of the alpine lakes, you'll be dying for a quick dip.

It makes me want to rise at dawn and eat a well-balanced breakfast.
